Missionary
Doctors of Dublin Eye Associates
Background
The world is beset by physical, as well as spiritual,
maladies, and it is the common commitment of the community of Christian
believers to try and alleviate these problems, to the extent this
is possible. Our doctors believe that it is imperative that we share
our skills and our faith as the opportunity presents, so that we may
be good stewards of the manifold blessings which we have been presented
by God.
The
Goal
Some fifteen to twenty million people in underdeveloped
countries of the world have treatable causes of physical blindness,
mainly cataract, and each year physicians of our practice participate
in reaching those as we are able. Millions more, perhaps billions,
face a spiritual darkness that dominates and degrades their lives,
their dignity, and clouds and confuses their hopes and dreams. If
we of the more affluent nations can reach out to even a few of these
people, we can help them to receive physical help in the form of needed
medical procedures or devices. As we use our God-given skills to meet
physical needs, we also attempt to construct a bridge to aid them
in coming to a life-changing decision to receive Jesus Christ as their
Savior and Lord.
Progress
So far through the year 2000, physicians and
technicians from our practice have participated in more than 45
overseas missions trips, mainly to Honduras and Jamaica, and have
performed approximately 2,000 free operations on patients in these
locations. In all cases a spiritual program has been in force as
well, and hundreds of these patients have been given spiritual vision
along with their surgery. Additional mission trips are planned for
each succeeding year, so that it is hoped that this will be a program
without end.
Thanks
Many companies that supply surgical materials
for our practice have donated generously to assist in our mission
efforts. Fairview Park Hospital and Meadows Memorial Hospital have
been instrumental in providing various support in the way of instruments,
unused goods saved from our local private surgical cases, and other
special needs as they have arisen. Alcon Surgical, Pharmacia, Staar
Surgical, Ciba Vision, and several other companies have given thousands
of dollars worth of goods to assist us. Our patients have contributed
hundreds of pairs of used glasses for the Jamaica mission trip.
Dr. David Altman of McRae, GA, has participated in numerous of our
missions trips, dispensing thousands of pairs of glasses to needy
Jamaicans.
